Putter shafts affect feel, balance and how stable the putter face stays through the stroke, which is why more golfers now upgrade them. Why upgrade your putter shaft?

Choosing a putter shaft

Straight or bent

  • Straight shafts suit putter heads with a hosel or neck, such as plumber's neck blades.
  • Single bend shafts are often used in heel shafted mallets for a small amount of offset.
  • Double bend shafts are common in face balanced mallets and blades without a hosel.

Tip diameter

Putter hosels usually take a .355 or .370 tip. Some heads use a flare tip that fits over a post on the head. Check your putter head before ordering, and look for the tip size in each product title.

Weight and material

Heavier shafts shift the balance point up towards the hands, which can make a putter feel more stable for golfers who get handsy. Graphite and multi-material shafts dampen vibration and change the feel at impact, while steel gives a firmer, traditional feel.

Length

Standard putters are usually 33 to 35 inches. Arm lock, belly and broomstick setups need longer shafts. Choose a length that sets your eyes over or just inside the ball with a comfortable posture.

Does a putter shaft make a difference?

Yes. A putter shaft changes feel, balance and how much the face twists through the stroke. Golfers often notice a more solid feel and steadier face with a premium shaft. It will not fix a poor stroke, but it can help a good stroke repeat more consistently.

Can I reshaft my own putter?

Yes, with the right tools. The old shaft is heated to release the epoxy, the new shaft is cut to length, and it is glued into the hosel at the correct alignment. Bent shafts must be aligned carefully, so many golfers have a club builder install them.

Will changing my putter shaft change the toe hang?

It can. Toe hang depends on where the shaft enters the head and the bend in the shaft. Swapping a double bend shaft for a straight shaft, or changing the offset, will change how the face balances. Choose a shaft designed for your head type to keep the intended balance.

What length putter shaft do I need?
